Four more airlines to join SIA at Changi T3 – 29/10/07

SINGAPORE. Singapore Airlines will be joined by China Eastern Airlines, Jet Airways, Qatar Airways and United Airlines in operating from Singapore Changi Airport Terminal Three when it opens on 9 January 2008.

The decision to move the airlines’ operations to T3 was reached after detailed assessments by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS). The assessments were based on distributing capacity usage across all three terminals to optimise the usage of airport capacity and facilities.

CAAS Director-General and CEO Lim Kim Choon said: “CAAS has made in-depth assessments of the airlines’ interest to move to T3. Our main aim is to optimise the usage of all three main terminals, which will provide capacity for airlines at each terminal to grow their operations. The four new airlines moving their operations to T3 will also enable Changi Airport to spread out usage of the three terminals in a balanced manner.

“We look forward to welcoming the new airlines at T3 and sharing their excitement about commencing flight operations at the new terminal,” he added.

As at 1 October Changi Airport is served by 81 airlines operating almost 4,220 weekly scheduled flights to 192 cities in 59 countries.

“The A380’s commencement of passenger flights marks a new milestone in aviation history,” said Lim Kim Choon. “Changi Airport is excited and proud to be the first airport in the world from which the A380 experience begins,” he added.

CAAS has spent US$68 million on airport modifications in preparation for the A380.

To mark the commencement of A380 passenger flights CAAS is running several events in T2’s Departure/Transit Mall from 23 October to 5 November. They include an exhibition marking the A380’s milestones in Singapore as well as games and a competition for passengers.
