GERMANY. The Fraport Group’s six airports served 6.9 million passengers in October, according to figures released today – up +1.7% on 2005 figures for the month.

However, the autumn vacation period did not create the usual surge in traffic at Frankfurt, said the group, with traditional Mediterranean destinations stagnating and European traffic the only growth engine, thanks to rising business travel.

“Increasingly serious capacity constraints” were cited as a reason for a -0.6% year-on-year dip at Frankfurt, which handled 4.8 million passengers during October.

Frankfurt-Hahn Airport posted the biggest growth, jumping by +23.9% to 347,512. There was a -5.8% fall at Hanover Airport, to 592,590, while Saarbrücken Airport experienced a -15.9% drop, to 45,718.

A total of 565,536 passengers used Fraport’s international terminal at Antalya Airport in Turkey, up +9%. The figure of 568,719 for Peru’s Lima Airport represented an increase of +16.2%.

Fraport Executive Board Chairman Dr Wilhelm Bender said: “Despite Frankfurt Airport’s passenger results – which demonstrate our capacity constraints, as did the August figures – we remain optimistic about our financial figures.”

The company will present its results for the first nine months of the year tomorrow morning.

Sixty-three million passengers used Fraport’s airports from January to October, a rise of +1.5% on last year’s figures for the same period.

Frankfurt Airport recorded +0.8% growth during the first ten months of the year, dealing with 45 million travellers.
