AUSTRALIA. Heinemann Oceania and Sydney Airport have agreed on a joint initiative spanning the next 18 months to transform the duty-free shopping experience at Australia’s leading international gateway.
As part of the transformation, popular Australian beauty retailer MECCA will enter an international terminal for the first time, having built an extensive presence in airport domestic terminals. In related news, Victoria’s Secret is expanding into Australian duty-free, while fast-growing beauty name Aesop recently made its Sydney Airport boutique debut in international Terminal 1.

Heinemann and Sydney Airport said they have embarked on a new chapter to refresh the duty-free retail offer, including “a complete redevelopment” of the spirits & wine, tobacco and confectionery zone, an overhaul of the full beauty offer, an expansion of the Heinemann-operated Hermès boutique, the refurbishment of arrivals and gate shops, and more developments to be announced.
A milestone, noted the partners, is the entry of MECCA into duty free for the first time. Founded in 1997, MECCA is the number one prestige beauty retailer in Australia, with over 4 million customers every year and a range of over 200 leading beauty brands.
The standalone MECCA store in Heinemann’s new beauty zone will join a network of over 110 stores across Australia and New Zealand.

MECCA’s arrival in Heinemann Tax & Duty Free at Sydney Airport next month will introduce many more leading beauty brands to the Heinemann beauty line-up, among them Diptyque, Byredo, Emma Lewisham, Westman Atelier and Glossier, plus MECCA’s in-house brands MECCA COSMETICA, MECCA MAX and kit. A curated offering of MECCA’s beauty services will also be available.

Recently launched into Sydney Airport duty-free is leading Australian beauty Aesop, which made its boutique debut in a 73sq m space in May, featuring the brand’s signature naturalistic, locally inspired designs.
Following its re-entry into Sydney Airport with Heinemann in T2 Domestic, Victoria’s Secret will expand its footprint into duty free for the first time in Australia with a 120sq m boutique. This will feature a full fashion and beauty range, with the beauty assortment appearing throughout Heinemann’s primary duty-free zone, and in arrivals stores.
A statement said, “The joint project is the result of many months of exchange between Heinemann and Sydney Airport on the challenges and opportunities in their shared business, and how to breathe new life in the duty-free shopping experience to excite current customers and to convert passengers into shoppers.
“All joint initiatives planned are laser focused on top-line sales growth, a metric that underpins the entire project, therefore lifting revenues for both business partners.”
Once the transformation is completed in mid-2027, the duty-free shopping experience will be “more compelling and resonant with Sydney Airport’s core passenger demographics of the future,” added Heinemann in a statement.

It added that brand assortments will be more oriented towards the Australian traveller, expanding Heinemann’s already strong local brand portfolio, and bringing brands loved by Gen Z to Australian travel retail for the first time.
The introduction of MECCA and Aesop also enhances the experiential retail offer in the airport, it added.
Heinemann Asia Pacific CEO Johannes Sammann said, “This project is born out of Heinemann and Sydney Airport’s shared recognition that something needs to change in our industry.
“It takes a lot of trust and deep partnership in order to have had the open discussions we have been having over most of 2025, but the end result will be a more elevated passenger experience, a more appealing retail offer, and a more commercially robust business in Sydney Airport.
“I am grateful for the strong partnership with Sydney Airport, MECCA, Aesop, Victoria’s Secret and all of our brand partners, which has made this very exciting transformation possible.”

Sydney Airport Group Executive Commercial Mark Zaouk said, “We’re delighted to welcome MECCA to Sydney Airport’s international retail offering, building on its existing presence in our domestic terminals, giving even more travellers access to one of Australia’s most loved beauty destinations.
“The addition of MECCA further strengthens our premium retail offering, giving passengers access to an exceptional range of beauty products and leading luxury brands before they depart. It’s another example of our commitment to delivering a world-class airport experience that showcases the very best of Australian retail.”
“We are thrilled to partner with Heinemann and Sydney Airport to introduce the MECCA experience to both Australian travellers and international visitors for the first time,” said MECCA Chief New Concepts Officer Maria Tsaousis.
“This milestone marks an exciting opportunity for us to connect with a global audience and to reimagine our signature MECCA customer experience within an international travel setting, providing travellers with a feel-good space to inspire and unlock a sense of self-care, creativity and love, while in transit.” ✈
