Henkell Freixenet celebrates 160th anniversary of Champagne Alfred Gratien with limited-edition release

The Angels’ Share is an homage to Champagne Alfred Gratien’s 160 years of excellence and ancestral know-how

Sparkling wine specialist Henkell Freixenet has unveiled a limited-edition Cuvée Paradis Rosé Brut Millésimé 2008 to celebrate the 160th anniversary of Champagne Alfred Gratien.

The Angels’ Share is the celebratory release of the house, which has been named one of The World’s Most Admired Champagne Brands since 2022 by Drinks International Magazine.

The cuvée undergoes natural fermentation in oak barrels before maturing for over 15 years in the cellar.

The limited-edition bottle features crafted details, including a delicate angel in gold, a reference to the ‘angels’ share’ (the amount of an alcoholic drink that is lost to evaporation during maturation) and the resting time of the house’s champagne collection in the cellar.

The Paradis Brut Rosé Millésimé 2008 is crafted using the house’s time-honoured traditions, including a careful selection of grapes, vinification and ageing in small oak barrels, or the choice not to carry out malolactic fermentation.

Champagne Alfred Gratien cellar master Nicolas Jaeger ensures that this generations-old process is meticulously followed.

The cuvée reveals a colour-reflecting “elegance and maturity”, featuring light copper highlights and fine effervescence.

The Angels’ Share is described as a refined rosé blend that combines the “elegance and minerality of chardonnay” with the fruitiness of pinot noir. The initial nose is mature, suggesting candied fruit, toast and caramel, with subtle notes of candied mandarin, saffron and juniper.

Complexity emerges, evolving towards precious wood, tonka bean and lobster bisque after aeration. On the palate it offers an acidic edge and a creamy effervescence.

Dressed in chalk and a hint of salt, the texture is both tight and tender. The long, sharp finish combines acidity, effervescence, salt and light bitters.

Suggested food pairings include shellfish and a delicate saffron sauce, breaded langoustines, or veal fillet with chanterelles.

The Angels’ Share is available at the Maison Alfred Gratien cellar shop and from wine merchants for an RRP of €110 (US$119). ✈
