October 5 in Hong Kong is shaping up as a very special night |
HONG KONG. The Moodie Report and leading German fashion house Hugo Boss today announced a major charity dinner in Hong Kong on 5 October.
All proceeds from the event called “˜Turning Tears into Smiles’ will go to The Smile Train, a unique programme dedicated to helping hundreds of thousands of children who have cleft lips and palates, especially in developing countries.
The Smile Train last year offered free cleft surgery to over 42,000 children in over 60 countries, claiming to “turn despair into hope and tears into smiles”. Embracing that theme, Hugo Boss and The Moodie Report have chosen to build on a joint sponsorship initiative earlier this year in which the two companies donated US$30,000 to The Smile Train, enough for 120 cleft operations.
“Now we want to go one giant step further,” said The Moodie Report Publisher Martin Moodie. “This is going to be a truly memorable evening and we’ve already received tremendous pledges of support and goodwill from Hong Kong’s whole travel retail community as well as other companies around the world. For as little as US$250 we can change the life of a child and their family forever. Just imagine what we can do as an industry when we act together.”
Nadine Heubel said: “When we first announced this initiative we said that we are all privileged to work in an industry in which we have many reasons to smile every day. Together with The Moodie Report we now plan to bring many, many smiles back to children around the world. We can promise the industry an evening to remember and we know that its legendary generosity will be shown at its best in supporting this wonderful cause.”
The Smile Train presence at the dinner will be led by its Chief Project Officer, China, Shell Xue. Dr Xue joined The Smile Train as Chief Project Officer for the China operations last September after more than 15 years working in various team leader positions in multi-national healthcare corporations. Prior to The Smile Train she was the Legal Representative and the China National Program Director of Project HOPE, a leading international non-profit organisation for worldwide medical services and education.
Details on the venue and donation opportunities will be announced in coming weeks. For information please e-mail Martin Moodie at Martin@TheMoodieReport.com or Nadine Heubel at Nadine_Heubel@hugoboss.com. We need the industry’s support – please put the date in your diary now.

MORE ABOUT THE SMILE TRAIN
Every year 200,000 babies are born with clefts. Cleft surgery funded by donations will help provide what The Smile Train describes as “a true, modern-day medical” miracle, which takes as little as 45 minutes and costs around US$250 per operation.
Clefts are a major problem in developing countries where there are millions of children who are suffering with unrepaired clefts. Most cannot eat or speak properly. Most are not allowed to attend school or hold a job. And all face very difficult lives, often filled with shame and isolation, pain and heartache.
