GERMANY. Spend a weekend in the Altstadt (Old Town) in Düsseldorf, and the chances are high that you will come across some of the splendid regional products of the city in its many busy stores, bars and restaurants, writes Dermot Davitt.
It might be one of the fine gin ranges such as Siegfried, Rhein or even Fortuna gin, which pays homage to the city’s red-and-white-wearing football team Fortuna Düsseldorf on its colourful label. It could be a Füchschen Altbier, one of the signature beers from the Altstadt.
And you will almost certainly have experienced herbal liqueur Killepitsch, which has its own bar in the city centre and is a requirement in digesting a heavy meal in one of the old-style brewery restaurants.

So it was with pleasure that on departure from the city on Sunday (7 December), I encountered these and other local and regional brands from North Rhine-Westphalia at Gebr. Heinemann-run Düsseldorf Duty Free at Düsseldorf Airport, featured here in our Images of the Day selection.
Passing through the non-Schengen walk-through store, adding a Killepitsch to the basket in honour of a memorable weekend away with friends was only natural.

The store features much more besides, including a well-ranged whisky campaign at the tasting bar, a festive zone for gifting and a special offers area that drew in many potential shoppers with its eye-catching red-and-white livery – mirroring the football team’s look and another hook for Düsseldorf lovers. ✈
