INDIA. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi yesterday (4 July) inaugurated the new Jodhpur Airport terminal in the Northwestern state of Rajasthan.

Jodhpur is Rajasthan’s second-largest city, located on the eastern edge of the famed Thar Desert.

Developed by Airports Authority of India, the INR480 crore (US$50.4 million), 23,000+ sq m terminal is designed to serve 2 million passengers annually.

Modis official YouTube channel declared, “Jodhpur welcomes a modern new airport terminal, strengthening air connectivity and enhancing the travel experience. The new terminal is set to boost tourism, trade and regional development while supporting Rajasthans growing aviation infrastructure.”

As reported, Orchid Ent Outfit has been awarded the master retail concession for the terminal, where it is developing and managing a full retail offering.

Orchid is an Indian travel retail and lifestyle retailer founded by entrepreneur Dhruv Jain’s parents Sharad & Aarti in 2000 (click here for his recent interview with The Moodie Davitt Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie).

Jain initially made his name in Indian airport retail with the 2016 launch and subsequent rapid development of the Toscee fashion brand.

Renderings highlight the new terminal’s spacious, modern design, featuring bright interiors and a strong sense of place expressed through regional design influences

“Our brief to ourselves is simple: the retail should feel like Jodhpur, not like every other airport,” said Dhruv Jain in a LinkedIn post. “We plan a mix of strong national brands and the best of local Marwari craft, curated for the passengers actually flying through the airport.

“Brand partners, the terminal is live and leasing conversations are on. Reach out. Set a course for brighter days,” he continued.

“The airport design is inspired by by Marwars architecture rather than a generic glass box,” Jain added.  The Marwar region of Rajasthan is famous for its rich, vibrant and intricate traditional art forms.

The concession builds on Orchid’s growing airport retail presence after securing the master retail concession for the new Kushok Bakula Rimpochee (Leh) Airport terminal in Ladakh – at an altitude of 3,256 metres, India’s highest commercial gateway.

In a social media post, Dhruv Jain described the concession as “a real step up in scale”, which represents the next stage in the company’s role as a master concessionaire. Look out for our follow-up interview with him, coming soon.
