Kiehl’s celebrates 160 years with ‘Kiehl’s Gives’ initiative

The new “Kiehl’s Gives” philanthropic initiative will be officially launched on 15 June

INTERNATIONAL. In line with its commitment to better serve the local communities where it trades, to celebrate its 160th anniversary Kiehl’s will establish “Kiehl’s Gives”, an ongoing global initiative to promote philanthropy around the world, in partnership with Julianne Moore, Pharrell Williams and the Scissor Sisters.

“We hope to engage customers in and increase awareness of the importance of giving back,” said Kiehl’s General Manager Worldwide Cheryl Vitali. “Kiehl’s Gives is a celebration of our causes, our customers, and our communities around the world.”

To kick off the initiative, on 15 June Kiehl’s will launch www.KiehlsGives.com with a global donation of US$160,000 to charitable organisations in the US and around the world in three key Kiehl’s causes: children’s wellbeing, environmental issues, and HIV/AIDS research – but it’s up to Kiehl’s visitors to determine how much goes where, by casting their vote.

Each pillar is brought to life through a short film series, viewable only at www.KiehlsGives.com , and featuring high-profile charitable individuals, who express their personal commitments to causes important to them:

Julianne Moore, “Kiehl’s Gives” Global Ambassador for Children’s Causes
“For me, helping to give kids a fair shake here in the US, and around the world is so important, and I’m grateful to be able to partner with Kiehl’s to help get this message out, ” said Moore, ambassador for Save the Children, one of the recipients of funding from the “Kiehl’s Gives” initiative.

Pharrell Williams, “Kiehl’s Gives” Global Ambassador for Environmental Causes
“These days there are many ways to build and manufacture using greener, more sustainable means, and Kiehl’s is a company I’ve worked with since 2010 to help get this message out,” said Williams, partner in Return Textiles, Inc, and founder of From One Hand to Another, his charitable foundation that is behind the construction of an ecobuilding in Virginia that will serve as an educational resource centre for children.

The Scissor Sisters, “Kiehl’s Gives” Global Ambassadors for HIV/AIDS Causes
“Supporting efforts to not only help find a cure for AIDS, but also to support those who live with it, is something very near and dear to our hearts,” noted Ana Matronic, lead singer of the Scissor Sisters, and supporter of After Hours Project, a local AIDS charity based in Brooklyn, NY, where she and other members of the brand live. “We are thankful to join Kiehl’s to be able to inspire more people to give back.”

Voting is active worldwide at www.KiehlsGives.com from 15 June – 31 August 2011. Visitors to the site can vote on one of the three pillars, and encourage friends to do the same.

Each pillar represents eight charitable organisations, and “Kiehl’s Gives” supports a total of 24 charities. The pillar that receives the most votes will receive the biggest donation, which will be distributed among the eight charities in the pillar. All charities that participate will be financially supported.

In other news, Kiehl’s continues to expand its travel retail presence, with the April opening of a new duty-paid store at San Francisco International Airport Terminal 2, in partnership with HMS Host.

The new Kiehl’s duty-paid store opened at San Francisco International Airport Terminal 2 in April

The store opening in San Francisco is said to be a particularly special one for Kiehl’s, as it embraces its long-standing affinity with the Golden Gate City (the first Kiehl’s store outside of New York opened on Fillmore Street).

Terminal 2 hosts around 5.5 million enplanements annually for American Airlines and Virgin America. Seen almost immediately upon entering the facility, the store features a number of signature Kiehl’s elements, such as red brick walls and wooden floors. The brand’s Mr Bones skeleton has been given a makeover, with his lab coat replaced by a vintage Harley Davidson waistcoat, tie-dye T-shirt and gold-coloured glasses. A baby blue Harley Davidson in the window completes the theme.

Initial feedback from passengers has been “outstanding”, according to the brand, as has performance. After just one month’s trading, the Kiehl’s boutique was the best-selling store per square foot in the entire terminal.
