Luxury in China Summit paints bright future for Chinese travel retail market

CHINA. An extraordinary and insightful Luxury in China Summit drew to a close tonight at a power-packed awards Gala Dinner.

The event was organised by Fortune Character Institute, a leading authority on the spending habits of China’s wealthy.

At the event, Fortune Character President and CEO Steven Yao told delegates of the company’s exciting plans for an annual research study into the spending habits of wealthy Chinese overseas travellers in a joint venture with The Moodie Report.

Dr Zhou Ting, Director of Fortune Character Institute, delivered an enthralling presentation at today’s conference, which drew an audience of over 300 wealthy consumers, brand companies and advertising and media industry executives. The event culminated tonight with the Fortune Character Luxury Awards [full results to follow].

As reported yesterday, Chinese overseas spending by travellers will reach US$80 billion this year, up from US$72.6 million in 2011, according to The 2012 China Luxury Report released by Fortune Character Institute at the event.

The Moodie Report Founder & Chairman Martin Moodie said that travel retail, both in China and abroad, was a vital and credible channel for selling and showcasing bona-fide luxury products to the Chinese consumer. He noted: “Whether they are spending at home or abroad, duty free or duty paid, Chinese travellers are the most vibrant force the global travel retail industry has ever seen.”
