INTERNATIONAL. There were smiles all round yesterday as confectionery company Perfetti van Melle presented a cheque for US$5,100 to The Smile Train children’s charity. Martin Moodie, Founder and Publisher of The Moodie Report, accepted the cheque in his capacity as a member of the charity’s Board.
Perfetti van Melle, which makes Chupa Chups lollipops, raised the money by donating US$100 for each customer who logged in to the company’s new travel retail website.
The cheque presentation took place yesterday on Perfetti van Melle’s booth at the IAADFS Duty Free Show of the Americas, where Director Travel Retail Mark Laros told The Moodie Report: “The idea for the initiative came to us at the MEDFA show in November, when there were lots of activities around The Smile Train. There is a clear link between Chupa Chups lollipops – which children put in their mouths – and the aims of the charity. We are all about children smiling and having fun.”
Laros thanked all his customers who had participated in the fund-raising initiative. “The reaction from retailers and customers was overwhelming,” he said.
Perfetti van Melle donated US$5,000 to the charity, but Laros added that one of his customers – a wholesaler from Andorra – had donated US$100 out of its own APL budget. “That’s where the extra US$100 came from out of the US$5,100 total,” he enthused.
The company’s specialist travel retail website (www.pvm-gtr.com) went live on Valentine’s Day, 14 February, and the money was raised over a total of six weeks.
