Plaza Premium expands African footprint with Dar es Salaam lounge

TANZANIA. Plaza Premium Group (PPG) has opened a lounge at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam, expanding its East African network as it targets business and leisure travel demand.

The 336sq m facility is located near Gate 6 in Terminal 3’s international departures area and can accommodate 86 passengers.

Door to a new Tanzania retreat: A wood-panelled reception opens onto the lounge, with window-side seating visible beyond

The opening forms part of PPG’s wider expansion programme in Africa, which the company identifies as a key growth market.

The lounge’s food offering focuses on Tanzanian cuisine, drawing on the country’s spice trade history and coastal Swahili cooking under PPG’s ‘Proudly Local’ approach.

Hot dishes include beef mishikaki, garlic-and-ginger-marinated skewers served with fresh kachumbari salad, and mtindi-braised kuku wa kupaka, chicken in a spiced coconut-and-yoghurt sauce.

Fresh fruit, salads and snacks offer lighter choices alongside the lounge’s hot food selection, which features a strong sense of place. Beef mishikaki skewers (below) are among the local food choices.

Breakfast options include mayai ya mchuzi wa nazi, boiled eggs in coconut curry served with warm chapati.

Baked goods and sweet dishes include coconut and cardamom cake, vitumbua coconut rice cakes and mini coconut maandazi, a type of Swahili doughnut.

Other local offerings include mabuyu, baobab with a red sugar glaze, and achari, a tangy-sweet mango pickle.

Individual seating and side tables give passengers space to catch up on work before boarding

The menu also features wild forest honey sourced from local beekeepers in Tanzania’s miombo woodlands.

Wider lounge facilities include workstations, high-speed wifi and charging points, alongside lounge seating, quiet relaxation areas and multi-faith prayer rooms.

The space has zones for individual travellers, families and business passengers, with a design incorporating Tanzanian cultural motifs.

Access to the lounge is available through advance online booking or passes purchased at the entrance.

PPG said the opening responds to growth in Tanzania’s aviation and tourism sectors and increasing international connectivity.

The Dar es Salaam lounge adds to PPG’s African presence, which includes Plaza Premium Lounges at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Kenya and Terminal 2 of Addis Ababa Bole International Airport in Ethiopia.

The group’s network also extends to South Africa through partnerships with the Mashonzha and Shongololo lounges at Johannesburg’s O. R. Tambo International Airport. ✈
