Porsche Design showcases clever design features – 17/04/07

GERMANY. Porsche Design Group has showcased the latest designs across its luggage, jewellery and watch ranges at this year’s Baselworld exhibition in Basel, Switzerland.

The German company has presented a diverse collection of new products for the travel retail market at Baselworld from its licensee partners Rimowa (luggage), Stahl (jewellery) and Eterna (watches).

The Moodie Report takes a look at some of the highlights from the portfolio:

Porsche Design showcased the new T-Frame series of luggage trolleys manufactured by Rimowa

Porsche Design T-Frame luggage series

Alongside manufacturers Rimowa, Porsche Design presented the new T-Frame series of upscale luggage. The new hard-case trolley collection has four models in varying sizes (52, 96, 111 and 152 litre capacities) and is available in classic black and bold lapis lazuli blue. The series will be introduced in specialist stores and Porsche Design Stores internationally from Summer 2007.

The aluminium frame of the trolley series is constructed from aluminium-magnesium alloy which reduces the overall weight of the trolley while still offering maximum stability. Stretched over the frame is a polycarbonate shell which is both lightweight as well as impact and temperature-resistant. This material is also highly flexible, durable and recyclable, according to the company.

The combination of aluminium frame and polycarbonate shell reduces the travelling weight of the trolleys, consequently making travelling more economical.

The aluminium centre frame integrated across the range features combination locks with a lock cylinder. American Transportation Security Administration (TSA) staff can open the cylinder for inspection purposes with a master key exclusively available to them without damaging either lock or suitcase, which is designed to facilitate US immigration procedures.

The Worldtimer P 6750 watch has a new type of movement

The latest timepiece from Porsche Design is constructed from titanium. The casing is available in two styles: matt titanium and titanium with a black PVD. Both versions are fitted with a black rubber strap with a latitude and longitude pattern in profile on the inside. This is said to enhance wearer comfort by allowing air to penetrate between the skin and strap. The folding clasp of the strap is also made of titanium.

The display can feature the time in two different time zones simultaneously. Eterna – licensee partner of Porsche Design – created the newly designed movement module incorporated into the Porsche Design Worldtimer P 6750.

Only 333 PTC Limited Edition 2007 accessories sets will be available from Autumn 2007

Porsche Design PTC Limited Edition 2007

In addition to the Worldtimer P 6750 watch, Eterna and Porsche Design displayed a new accessories set at Baselworld.

Composed of an automatic chronograph, cufflinks and a key ring, the PTC 2007 is a limited edition of just 333 pieces.

All three items in the set are described as functional jewellery pieces and are crafted from the same two materials. The metal parts are made of fine-brushed and polished titanium, while the accompanying leather sections are in perforated lamb leather. The stitching of the leather and some of the hands and scales on the chronograph dial are orange-coloured.

The Porsche Design chronograph is the centrepiece of the jewellery set which is delivered in a box specially manufactured for the PTC Limited Edition 2007. The stop and tachymeter functions are distinguished from the normal time measuring function of this watch by the colour orange.

The main body of the dial comes in monochrome colouring, the signature styling for a Porsche Design chronograph. A scratch-resistant and anti-reflection-treated sapphire crystal is used for the transparent case back. In this limited edition, the weight-optimised titanium rotor features an orange-coloured oscillating weight made of heavy metal.

The jewellery set will be available from Autumn 2007 at selected Porsche Design dealers and in Porsche Design stores.

The Grooves men’s jewelley range has been expanded to include a bracelet, stainless steel rings and an SOS pendant

Porsche Design Jewellery Collection

Jewellery maker Friedrich Stahl GmbH alongside Porsche Design Group presented new editions to the brand’s successful jewellery collection at Baselworld. The Grooves range has been enlarged to include three new types of accessory: a bracelet, stainless steel rings, and a leather strap with an SOS pendant.

The bracelet is made of genuine braided leather and features a magnetic stainless steel catch. The stainless steel rings incorporate a bold relief design and have a specially-crafted inside that guarantees wearer comfort, the company said.

The collection also includes a watertight pendant that can be screwed open for stowing documents with personal data. The SOS pendant – also made of stainless steel – dangles from a soft leather strap to which it is safely secured by a silver bayonet-type lock.

The Porsche Design Jewellery Collection offers cufflinks, tie clips, rings, key rings, bill clips and bracelets.

Component materials such as titanium, stainless steel, silver and gold are combined with precious stones or set with diamonds, onyx or ebony.

The stainless steel components of the Grooves line are produced on state-of-the-art, computer-controlled machines and joined manually later. Every item is polished by hand to give it either a glossy or a matt sheen.
