ITALY. Passenger traffic at the Rome airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino rose +7.4% year-on-year for the first quarter of 2010.
International passenger traffic (excluding EU traffic) experienced the strongest growth of +18.9% year-on-year. EU passenger traffic increased +8.1% whereas domestic passenger traffic was up by just +0.2%.
Total first quarter passenger traffic at Fiumicino Airport rose by +8.4% year-on-year. This growth was lead by an increase of +14.2% in international passenger traffic. EU passenger traffic grew by +9.7% and international passenger traffic (excluding EU traffic) surged +20.9%.
Fiumicino Airport’s overall quality is gaining momentum; it was revealed that during the first quarter of the year, 75% of flights were on time compared to 65.6% in 2009. The airport is focusing on continuous quality improvement especially given the proximity of the Easter holidays.
Popular European destinations for the Easter holidays include, Paris, London, Barcelona, Madrid, Athens, Amsterdam, Geneva, Prague and Budapest. Other prevailing international destinations comprise Egypt, Tunisia, Tel Aviv, Dubai, New York, Mauritius and the Maldives.
Since the start of the year numerous new connections have been implemented and the airport experienced a rise in the frequency of flights to and from Fiumicino. Other route additions will be operational from the summer season. These include Alitalia routes to Los Angeles, Amman, Vienna and Malaga, Air Transat flights to Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver, and Emirates flights to Dubai.
