Sino-French cultural festival marks grand opening of Wuhan Downtown Duty Free Shop

The grand opening was attended by Wangfujing Group Vice President and Wangfujing Duty Free General Manager Hu Yong, along with key executives from Wushang Group

CHINA. Wangfujing Duty Free officially opened its downtown duty-free store in Wuhan, which it jointly operates with Wushang Group, on Saturday (28 June).

As reported, Wuhan Downtown Duty Free Shop at Wushang Mall extends Wangfujing’s operations from offshore and airport duty-free to a new channel.

The launch was timed to coincide with Fête de la Musique, blending cultural events with retail activity. The event highlighted Sino-French exchange, blending music, art and retail to reflect Wuhan’s positioning as an international, culturally engaged metropolis.

Wuhan Downtown Duty Free Shop was brought to life with support from local authorities, with Wuhan Customs and the Wuhan Municipal Bureau of Commerce forming a working group to assist with planning and coordination.

Their involvement included helping to clarify procedures for the movement and management of duty-free goods between stores, warehouses and sales points, and facilitating system integration with the Customs supervision platform. These steps contributed to the regulatory and operational readiness of the store.

The Wuhan Downtown Duty Free Shop features separate zones for duty-free goods and taxed items as well as a tea break area.

It has secured direct cross-border procurement agreements with over 100 international brands, offering a wide range of products, including wine and food, digital electronics, accessories, cultural souvenirs and refreshments.

Regional offerings add sense of place to the retail environment

The taxed goods section highlights over 700 locally themed products such as ‘Forbidden City Cultural Creations’, ‘Deep Mountain Market’ and ‘Wuhan Gifts’, showcasing elements of Jingchu culture.

The opening of the Wuhan Downtown Duty Free Shop adds a novel retail option for both residents and visiting tourists, contributing to the city’s broader commercial development.

It is expected to serve as a dedicated travel retail hub in Wuhan, with the potential to attract a wider consumer base and support the growth of the local duty-free sector.
