‘Voyage Wine’ legacy in a bottle: Kavalan debuts limited-edition Solist Madeira Cask in travel retail

Kavalan enhances its travel retail range with a cask-strength expression shaped by Madeira’s maritime heritage and rooted in centuries of barrel-aged tradition

Taiwanese company Kavalan Distillery has launched a one-litre limited edition of its Solist Madeira Cask Single Cask Strength Single Malt Whisky for global travel retail.

It is now rolling out across key markets including South Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia and Japan.

Although Kavalan Solist Madeira Cask has previously been available in selected domestic markets in limited quantities, this marks its first release in travel retail, presented in a 1 litre format exclusively for the channel.

Approximately 6,000 bottles will be available, bottled at natural cask strength ranging from 50% to 59.9% ABV, depending on the individual cask

The first-fill single cask expression is bottled at natural cask strength (50–59.9% ABV), highlighting Madeira cask warmth alongside layered fruit, spice and refined sweetness.

Produced on the Portuguese archipelago of Madeira, the namesake beverage is a historic fortified wine renowned for its vibrant acidity and long known as the ‘Voyage Wine’.

Y.T. Lee, Chairman of King Car Group, which owns the brand, highlighted the barrels’ origins, which centuries ago travelled aboard merchant ships linking Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Lee said: “This is where it gets interesting: exposure to heat and movement during these long sea voyages had the unintentional effect of enriching the wine’s flavour, shaping the distinctive character for which Madeira is known today.

“To age our whisky, we’ve chosen casks that previously held wine made from Tinta Negra, Madeira’s principal grape variety, whose intense fruit character beautifully complements Kavalan’s tropical whisky style.”

The whisky is housed in metallic pink packaging and bottled at natural cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour, highlighting the Solist approach of preserving each cask’s pure character.

Tasting notes

Colour: Deep marmalade.

Nose: Opens with scents of fresh cherry, grape and apple, complemented by hints of honey and cinnamon spice. The buttery aromas of toffee, almond and vanilla fill the background.

Palate: Rich melon and apricot flavours intensify an array of fig, marmalade, and grape, sprinkled with white pepper and cinnamon. Develops into the taste of sweet toffee and honey, leaving a full and long-lasting aftertaste.
