Belfast City Airport opens revamped Departures zone in £6 million upgrade; new concessions open for business – 01/12/09

UK. George Best Belfast City Airport yesterday opened the first phase of a £6 million terminal upgrade featuring a new-look Departures zone on the first floor.

Commercial space has increased by +60% and features new concessions from World Duty Free and WHSmith, plus HMSHost-operated brands Bushmills Bar, Harvest Market Restaurant and Lavazza Coffee.

Security search facilities have also been enhanced, and will reduce waiting times at peak hours, said the airport. The bmi and Flybe airline lounges have also been relocated and refurbished. The final phase of the project is expected to be complete by March 2010.

George Best Belfast City Airport CEO Brian Ambrose said: “Passengers will see a remarkable difference when departing the airport. This significant private investment will enhance the customer experience as we aim to stay ahead of the curve in accommodating increasing passenger numbers.

“When the works are completed in March 2010, Belfast will have an airport the city can be proud of and the envy of many other cities.”

Work on the refurbishment was undertaken by building contractor McLaughlin & Harvey.
