UK. bmibaby celebrated its first year in operation from Birmingham International Airport (BIA) on 6 January. The airline has handled around one million passengers since its launch at the location.
bmibaby began operations from Birmingham in January 2005, with three based aircraft flying over 135 weekly flights to nine destinations. The airline now has five Boeing 737 based aircraft flying 220 weekly return flights to 12 destinations, including Alicante, Amsterdam, Belfast (International), Bordeaux, Cork, Edinburgh, Geneva, Knock, Malaga, Nice Palma and Prague.
Throughout the summer bmibaby will increase the number of daily services to Edinburgh from two to three a day, having seen a phenomenal uptake for its low cost flights, which has been further fuelled by the introduction of new lower fares throughout 2005.
bmibaby Marketing Director David Hodge commented: “It is amazing that in just one year of operation bmibaby is already celebrating carrying a million passengers from BIA.
“Birmingham has been bmibaby’s most successful launch from any airport in our history, proving the high demand for low cost travel in the West Midlands region. Our growth over the last year reinforces bmibaby’s position as the largest low cost airline in the Midlands. We hope to continue exceeding passenger expectations next year by offering a wide range of routes and services at even lower prices.”
Business Development Director Peter Vella added: “We are extremely pleased at the success that bmibaby has experienced over the past year. bmibaby has gone from strength to strength with the introduction of two extra aircraft based at BIA and the range of destinations that they serve has something for everyone. We wish them a very successful year and look forward to celebrating their second year here at BIA.”
Passengers who checked in for bmibaby’s morning flights to Alicante, Malaga and Geneva on the 6 January were invited to join the celebrations and received special complimentary birthday goody bags from airline staff.
