Clogau Gold chief scoops business award – 09/12/09

Award winner: Clogau Gold Managing Director Ben Roberts

UK. Ben Roberts, Managing Director of Welsh jewellery brand Clogau Gold, has been awarded a top business accolade in the UK.

The young businessman, whose company uses the same Welsh gold used in the British Royal family’s wedding rings, was named Bangor University Business Person of the Year at the Daily Post’s Achievement Wales 2009 Business Awards held last week.

This accolade recognises the person that, according to the Daily Post newspaper, “truly stands out from other business men and women, helping to grow not only the reputation of their respective organisation but also the region, showing the entrepreneurial spirit that typifies the region’s resilience and resurgence”.

Aged 32, Roberts is one the youngest ever to receive this prestigious award. He said: “Awards like these are a fantastic accolade but I really must point out that this is more of an award for the team than just myself. I’m very fortunate to have such a dedicated team and the success in all areas of the business over the last three years is down to one simple factor – we’re all working towards the same goal. We all want the same things for the company, to continue growing and producing great Jewellery which is quintessentially Clogau.”

Gold standard: William and Ben Roberts

Despite his company’s success throughout 2009, Roberts said he was looking ahead to 2010 with anticipation, owing to the uncertain economic environment and the fluctuating price of gold.

Having taken over the leading role of Managing Director from his father William only a few years ago, Roberts reflected on the brand’s journey. “It’s fabulous to get recognition at the end of a year like 2009 and totally unexpected. Seeing the transition first hand as Clogau has developed from a cottage industry business, producing just a five-piece range for souvenir shops in Snowdonia, into Clogau Gold – the brand which has established itself firmly on the high street and on many people’s Christmas wish lists this year – is just the most exciting feeling for me.”

He added: “In summary though, we have some fantastic new jewellery being launched throughout next year and I’m positive that we’ll continue to market these as expertly as we have so far this year, although inevitably Clogau Gold jewellery will always speak for itself and the marketing is secondary to some extent.”

Clogau Gold exhibited at the TFWA World Exhibition in October and is expanding its business in travel retail under Head of Global Sales David Butler.
