Images of the Day: Athletes arrive in force at Milano Malpensa as the Winter Olympics unfold

Our regular feature, brought to you in association with Duty Free Global from Ireland, celebrates memorable scenes, moments, launches and campaigns related to the global aviation and travel retail sphere.

The airport serves as a first welcome to Italy for athletes, capturing the start of their Olympic journey

ITALY. Today’s images follow the movement of athletes and equipment through Milano Malpensa Airport during the Winter Olympics (4-22 February), as the terminal becomes a hub for international arrivals.

The airport has already welcomed 1,400 athletes and technical staff representing 77 delegations, with the largest contingents arriving from the USA (350), South Korea (100), Japan (50) and Finland (50).

Operational coordination is managed through the Action Room, a 24/7 logistics operations centre where SEA personnel work in close collaboration with the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation

Alongside personal luggage, thousands of specialist items are flowing through the terminal – 2,800 checked bags, 1,400 pieces of sports equipment and 1,600 oversized items, including hockey sticks, skis, skates, bicycles and crates carrying essential food and medical supplies.

Volunteers and operational teams work in sync to keep arrivals moving. Two hundred SEA volunteers assist teams with everything from directions to baggage, while 300 specially designed trolleys speed the transport of equipment through the terminal.

National colours and camaraderie shine at arrivals

The recently refurbished Terminal 1 provides the perfect backdrop for this choreography of arrivals, as athletes step off planes and prepare to move on to the Games.

SEA Milan Airports noted, Milano Malpensa is not merely a point of arrival, but the first point of contact with Italy for athletes and delegations.”
