Jetstar’s impact drives up Auckland Airport’s passenger numbers in April but key North Asian traffic plummets – 25/05/09

NEW ZEALAND. International arrivals at Auckland Airport rose by +9.9% year-on-year in April to 253,155, buoyed by a +23.1% increase in traffic from Australia and Easter falling a month later this year.

Auckland Airport was profiled in the latest issue of The Moodie Report Digital Print Edition

Jetstar commenced trans-Tasman services from Auckland on 28 April with two scheduled flights per day. This will create an additional 258,000 seats between Australia and Auckland each year.

However from a travel retail perspective there were alarming drops from two key North Asian nationalities – the South Koreans and the Japanese.

Korean traffic, hit by the slump in that country’s economy, was down -42.5% year-on-year to 3,107. Japanese arrivals were off by -13.3% to 4,409. Arrivals from Mainland China were down by -2.2% to 10,237.
