UK. Luxottica is hosting its third sunglasses category management workshop on the afternoon of 20 September (Tuesday) at the TFWA World Exhibition in Cannes.

The hour-long programme will include a category performance update and best-in-class case-studies from the partnership initiatives over the last 12 months.

In addition, Luxottica is launching the inaugural Sunglasses Awards to recognise the best and most progressive travel retailers for the sunglasses category. These are companies that have enthusiastically adopted a category management approach, implemented with excellence and are now reaping the rewards in sunglasses sales, Luxottica said.

The awards will be judged by a panel of senior executives across the travel retail and sunglasses supplier community. There are five awards:

• Best in-store environment for sunglasses
• Best standalone sunglasses concept
• Best sunglasses promotional initiative
• Most supportive non-retailer partner
• Sunglasses retailer of the year

Back in 2009, Luxottica established targets for the growth of the category in coming years and outlined basic principles of sunglasses category management. An objective was set to double the size of the category within five years and break into the top 10 product category rankings. Sunglasses were ranked number 16 at the time.

Luxottica Group Travel Retail Director Francis Gros commented: “For the second successive year, sunglasses was the fastest growing category in travel retail in 2010. We broke the US$1 billion dollar mark for the very first time at +28.5%, and climbed to a category ranking of 12.

“This performance is just reward for all the effort and investment that everyone associated with our category has been putting in. But we can’t stand still and there remains a huge amount of untapped growth potential. I look forward to welcoming the industry to our workshop, with the objectives of maintaining momentum, recognising success and having fun along the way.”
