Shinsegae Duty Free rides K-wave momentum as landmark BTS concert fuels sales surge

BTS’s long-awaited comeback album Arirang drives frenzied demand for branded merchandise such as BT21 and TinyTAN among Korean and international fans

SOUTH KOREA. Shinsegae Duty Free’s K-Wave Zone is set to maintain strong momentum into April, driven by K-pop-led spending, following a surge boosted by BTS’s blockbuster comeback concert and ahead of South Korean boy band Big Bang’s highly anticipated 20th anniversary.

The K-pop speciality store recorded a +120% sales surge in the first three weeks of March, driven by heightened traffic surrounding BTS’s return.

Since opening in January on the 11th floor of its Myeong-dong flagship, the K-Wave Zone has expanded its offering to include merchandise from eight artists, reinforcing its position as a key platform for K-content-driven spend.

From one K-wave highlight to another, the much-anticipated return of Big Bang on stage is further strengthening demand momentum

K-pop artists featured are BTS, Blackpink, Big Bang, G-Dragon, NCT, Ateez, Babymonster and Zerobaseone. The store also offers character IP products, including G-Dragon’s Jo&Friends and BTS-inspired BT21 and TinyTAN.

Following BTS’s recent concerts, merchandise demand surged with repeated sell-outs, while the release of the group’s new album Arirang on 26 March further boosted global fan visitation.

The store is anticipating stronger engagement in April ahead of Big Bang’s performance at Coachella, with G-Dragon-related merchandise drawing increased attention. Sales of related items such as light sticks and keyrings rose +90% within a month of their January launch, with momentum continuing into the first three weeks of March as sales increased +103% month-on-month.

Shinsegae Duty Free noted plans to expand its line-up next month with official G-Dragon photo merchandise, aligning with concert-linked shopping trends. Global fan anticipation is building as Big Bang returns to the Coachella stage for the first time in six years, marking its 20th debut anniversary.

An increased demand for artist IP merchandise is observed around live performance periods.
