William Grant & Sons has unveiled a landmark creative collaboration between The Balvenie and American visual artist Daniel Arsham for a limited-edition collection inspired by the distillery’s Five Rare Crafts.

Working closely with Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, Arsham will design a phased artistic programme that will roll out in stages before the forthcoming release, The Dawn of Our Spirit, a hand-crafted whisky collection that includes an ultra-rare expression and a series of collectible limited editions.
The collection reinterprets The Balvenie’s Five Rare Crafts: barley, cooperage, malting floor, copper stills and Malt Master expertise, through Arsham’s artistic perspective.

The collaboration will extend into immersive experiences across Asia and the USA, jointly curated by Arsham and McKechnie.
The duo will explore the artistry within their respective practices, centred on The Balvenie’s largely unchanged Home Floor Maltings, in operation since around 1931.

With a shared emphasis on time, rarity and materiality, the partners align their work around capturing the moment creation becomes art.
McKechnie contributes deep knowledge of the distillery’s craft and spirit. She brings a contemporary edge to the portfolio while preserving the traditional skills behind its signature honeyed character, blending instinct with technical mastery.

Arsham is recognised for combining art, architecture and performance through structural experimentation and historical inquiry. His sculptural approach and focus on time extend to the spirits category, enhancing the collaboration’s creative vision.
Together with McKechnie, Arsham will deliver what The Balvenie describes as its most ambitious partnership to date.

McKechnie said, “The Balvenie’s approach remains the same today as it always has been; it is a story of artistry, innovation and human endeavour.
“Our collaboration with Daniel Arsham has become a creative dialogue exploring the enduring character of our spirit, formed by our consistent approach across multiple generations. We look forward to unveiling our collaboration to the world, later this year.”
Arsham added: “Learning of The Balvenie’s time-honoured skills and its dedication to the most traditional methods of making whisky is inspiring. Our collaboration is rooted in a shared respect for both process and time.” ✈
