GERMANY. The new Terminal 2 at Berlin Brandenburg Airport opened today, with Gebr. Heinemann’s 768sq m walk-through duty free & Travel Value shop among the commercial highlights airside.
T2 is designed for six million passengers a year, with low-cost carrier Ryanair the main user. It was built alongside T1 and set to open in late 2020 but this was delayed due to the pandemic.

Gebr. Heinemann played a key role in designing the 1,400sq m airport plaza with the airport company. The open, accessible space features the anchor store, three gastronomic concepts and one further shop.
Regional products and brands are to the fore in the main Heinemann outlet. These include Berliner Luft and Berliner Brandstifter in the spirits category and Knalle popcorn, Felicitas chocolate and Ohde marzipan in confectionery.
The strong regional focus is also reflected in the design of the shop: the back walls are sprayed with graffiti, with artists from Berlin engaged for this project.

The graffiti motifs are also reflected in the category furniture right. For example, a martini glass is emblazoned above the liquor, tobacco and confectionery section, a woman in sunglasses can be seen above the accessories area, and colourful motifs such as a bear and a plane dropping Smarties adorn the children´s corner.
Other design elements include two garden swings near the tasting bar, which invite travellers to linger. Sustainability was also a vital design feature: much of the furniture was already used at other locations.
Heinemann Duty Free Managing Director at Berlin Airport Steffen Jopp said: “The design of our shop is like our capital itself: colourful, unconventional and varied. Anyone who has passed through the security check feels like being back in Berlin. Our sales expectation for the new Terminal 2 shop is around 10% of our total sales in Berlin this year. However, we now have to wait and see how the booking situation develops against the backdrop of the war.”
Gebr. Heinemann now operates eight shops across the two Berlin Brandenburg terminals. When the airport started business on 31 October 2020, the company opened two large duty free & Travel Value shops, two gate shops, two fashion shops and a crew shop in Terminal 1.
