ITALY. German travel retailer Gebr Heinemann has unveiled its Heinemann Duty Free branding at a much expanded 650sq m store at G. Marconi Di Bologna Airport.
The new-look outlet is some five-and-a-half times bigger than before. An official opening will be held in early May.
A second duty free shop is undergoing renovation in the airport’s non-Schengen zone and by mid-year will offer some 360sq m of retail space, four-and-a-half times larger than the former area.
Both shops incorporate walk-through layouts.
Gebr Heinemann has been operating the Bologna duty free shops since March 2011 in partnership with Italian subsidiary Travel Retail Italiana.

The extended space means a wider range of perfumes, cosmetics, spirits, confectionery and accessories, the company said. Heinemann has also devoted a large proportion of floor space to its new “˜Regionals Market’ destination merchandise concept.
Eye-catching features to bring the Italian sense of “˜la dolce vita’ [the good life] to the store include an olive tree surrounded by blackboard-finish shelves decorated by a chalk artist. Passengers can now enjoy the aromas and tastes of Italy, from Parmesan cheese to salami to Limoncello, and a wide range of Italian wines and confectionery.
ABOUT TRAVEL RETAIL ITALIANA
Travel Retail Italiana was founded in 2010 as a joint venture between Gebr Heinemann and its Slovenian partner Regal GH. It became a wholly owned subsidiary of Heinemann in 2012.
At the end of 2010, Travel Retail Italiana successfully secured a 10-year concession to run the duty free shops at Bologna Airport. Following a short renovation phase, the company initially took charge of a 120sq m shop in the Schengen zone and an 87sq m store in the non-Schengen area, both of which have been substantially enlarged and redeveloped as part of the airport overhaul programme.
