Singapore Changi Airport posts +18.8% surge in March traffic

SINGAPORE. Singapore Changi Airport has reported 9.94 million passenger movements in the first quarter of 2010, up +16.5% compared to the same period (January-March) in 2009.

The numbers are flattered by the difficult start to 2009, but they will still be welcomed by Changi Airport Group and its commercial partners as they suggest a protracted recovery is firmly under way.

For the month of March some 3.45 million passenger movements were recorded, a growth of +18.8% compared to March 2009. This is the third consecutive month of double-digit growth in passenger traffic.

Low-cost carriers (LCCs) continued to contribute strongly to passenger growth at Changi, but full service carriers (FSCs) accounted for more than 50% of the increase. Passengers carried on LCCs and FSCs increased by +48.9% and +12.4% respectively.

Aircraft movements were up +9% to 62,723 for the January-March period. A total of 21,604 aircraft movements were registered in March, up +10.5%.

New city links in March included Jinan and Qingdao in China, operated by Shenzhen Airlines and China Eastern Airlines respectively. Changi Airport is now connected to some 200 cities in about 60 countries and territories.
