Strong airside sales spur flying start to the year for Zürich Airport’s commercial revenues – 13/02/08

Peter Eriksson: “January 2008 looks very good and February even better”

SWITZERLAND. Zürich Airport’s commercial revenues have got off to a rousing start in 2008 with January net sales to consumers rising by +8.9% year-on-year.

That delivered sales of CHF34.9 million (US$31.6 million), just outstripping passenger growth of +8.4%.

Growth was driven by a fine airside performance with revenues rising by +13.1% year-on-year. Landside sales increased by just +3.3%

Net sales per departing passenger in January reached CHF45.21 (US$40.97), a +0.4% gain. Airside that figure rose +4.3% year-on-year but the total was depressed by a landside decline of -4.7%.

During January, Zürich Airport handled 1,544,640 passengers. Transfer passengers rose +7.5% to 531,804 while passengers originating or departing from Zürich increased by +9.8% to 1,004,211.

The passenger share held by low cost airlines reached 9.5%, showing a substantial increase against the 7.5% of January 2007. 55% of that growth was contributed by Air Berlin and 25% by easyJet.

Chief Commercial Officer Marketing & Real Estate Peter Eriksson told The Moodie Report: “We are very pleased with the 2007 results, January 2008 looks very good and February even better.”

Air Traffic Movements increased by +10.0% to 23,131 in the month.

Reviewing last year’s performance, the airport company said that traffic growth in 2007 exceeded expectations, as reported.

Following a strong increase of +11.5% during the first quarter, growth figures saw a substantial decline in the second and third quarters. Fortunately, the fourth quarter witnessed a +8.9% rebound.

“This unexpected strong rebound during the last quarter led to final passenger figures of 0.3 million passengers (+ 1.7%) above the traffic guidance of 20.4 million given last summer,” said the company.

“As a major part of the airports costs are fixed, this additional traffic leads to substantial net profit improvement.”

The detailed figures will be communicated within the year-end results of Flughafen Zürich AG (Zürich Airport) on 13 March.
