FRANCE/UK. UK-France ferry operator SeaFrance is set to cease trading after a French court put the company into liquidation today.
Sailings by SeaFrance between Dover and Calais were suspended in November after the European Commission ruled that a €200m (£176m) bailout by the French government was illegal.
A cooperative of SeaFrance employees had sought to stave off the closure by taking over the firm, a move that also failed.
According to news reports, earlier today Eurotunnel said it was still examining a bid for the company, which employs around 1,000 people on both sides of the Channel.
The company carried more than 3.5 million passengers a year on its Dover-Calais services.
